Remaining in the Present Moment

I hope everyone is having a lovely Saturday. I just wanted to take a moment to remind every one of you how vital it is to live in the present moment.

We spend so much time with our faces buried in devices, providing ourselves with multiple electronic distractions that all too often rob us of living our lives. Putting your phone down or walking away from the tv or computer can bring an immense level of peace to your life and I want to provide you with a few quick steps into how to bring yourself into the present moment and begin living your life for the now.

I want to begin by reminding you why you should spend as much of your time experiencing moments in the now. Our past has already happened and we have no business living there; our future is out of our control and living for the unknown is not a great place for us either. The best way to find peace and happiness is by remaining as present as possible and enjoying each and every moment as our present unfolds before us.

Step 1: Put down or walk away from your device and close your eyes. Take a deep breath in and allow your senses to flood with everything in your immediate surroundings.

Step 2: Open your eyes and let your mind become aware of those immediate surroundings. Notice the area around you, notice the textures, colors, and geometrical features.

Step 3: Allow your mind to pick up on the smells around you. Hopefully, most of them are pleasant, but nothing will bring you to the now like becoming aware of your surroundings if smells are unpleasant *insert chuckles here*.

Step 4: Take time to touch something near you. Feel the texture of your clothes beneath your fingers or the sensations of holding the hand of a partner. Our sense of touch is one of our most sensitive senses and a great way to ground ourselves into the present moment.

Step 5: Listen to the sounds around you. Is someone talking? Can you hear the voices of your children, partner, or parents? Do they sound happy, sad, frustrated? Are the birds chirping outside? Is there rain falling?

Step 6: Remain in this state of heightened senses for as long as you need to. Whatever it takes to yank you away from the past, future, and social media to the present moments in your reality.

Being present as often as possible is an excellent way to bring you the inner peace that so many of us are attempting to find in the “tomorrows” and the “yesterdays”. Take time for yourselves and spend time interacting with your loved ones. Our days stretch the more we fill them with moments and time is precious; don’t waste it.
