HOW TO HIRE A GOOD UX UI DESIGNER

I have been hiring web designers for my agency for some time now. I would say I have interviewed at least 100+ designers, hired a dozen, fired a few.

When hiring offshore designers, I have found most lack life experience with online user experience. For example most people overseas do not use a credit card to make a purchase online, but yet they are expected to design a seamless credit card checkout experience.

When they are researching the UX journey, they are usually researching experiences in their own home town (which will be completely different from USA or European countries).

Before picking the right person, you must explore their portfolios carefully. I usually ask for their dribble or behance portfolio url link. Once you have their portfolio url, criticise their portfolio based on colour choice, typography readability, user experience.

Most top designers have moved to adobe XD as this is the fastest design tool and allows many automation (which is not offered by photoshop). Those designers who know both are also great!

3. How do you undertake user experience research?

You want to pay attention here. They have to know when to drop their egos and perfectly designed screen layout to accept what the users prefer. They should be able to learn how to design for use. This part is hard to judge without being an expert (but try to think of the best web experiences you have had and why!)

4. Are you comfortable with creating illustration for web design?

You really need to know this as incorporating illustration is the new thing! Many ui ux designers will say I can’t add illustrations as I’m not a graphic designer which is super annoying (as you will need to hire a graphic designer seperately if ux ui designer doesnt know how to do illustration).

So if you want illustrations make sure you confirm with the designer he can create custom illustrations.

5. Have you created a full click through design on adobe XD or InVision before?

If they know how to create click through proto-type and can show you the link, your talking to a top designer here!

6. Are you comfortable creating animations? Can you show me some of your animation?

If they say yes, your onto a winner, top designer alert. Make sure you ask them to show their work to confirm!

Experienced designers will have live site examples they can share. This will help you judge their experience.

Ask them to design a homepage or a critical page. Provide them some direction and see how they take direction. You want to observe how innovative they are and how good they are in UX.

Some designers are only UX oriented, others are UI oriented. Understanding the strength of the candidate will make it easier for you to determine whether they are the right fit!
