Thoughts on Running Everyday

As I reached the end of 2018 and managed to complete the fairly simple challenge I’d set myself of running every week for the year I thought about what I could do next. Running every day was the obvious answer, so rather than coming up with something more interesting that’s what I did.

As I don’t really like new years resolutions, starting new things on the first of the month, or the idea of locking myself into a year long challenge I decided to run every day in January. And start on the 30th December.

All pretty straight forward, they actually require you to have done a year before it counts, so I’m on more of a mini-streak for now. I live in New Zealand and don’t own a treadmill so it’ll be mostly occurring ‘over hill and dale’ for me. A little bit of road here and there too. Anyway, here’s what I’ve learnt from my mini streak.

I’ll probably carry on my mini-streak until sometime in February or until winter hits (June in New Zealand), or maybe I’ll just shoot for an arbitrary number of days and see if I start getting a bit more hooked on the streak. Might be fun.

So whilst I’m really enjoying this, I don’t think it’s for everyone and it probably depends a lot on your approach to running. Running for obligation is a great way to hate running (try asking someone at the thick end of marathon training), but doing a little all the time is strangely a lot easier to manage than more sporadic runs that equal a similar total distance. More than anything this has highlighted for me how much we trick ourselves into thinking we need to run further or faster all the time, and how much that sucks the enjoyment out of the sport. Just going out for a quiet lap of the neighborhood as the suns going down, or running of the energy from two coffees before breakfast are enjoyable for what they are. How fast did I go? I don’t even care. I went, that’s it.
