Techniques for decision making

Our starting point — every vaguely related thought that we could come up with in 10 minutes, then sorted by category! Very fun and very useful for brainstorming.

Our agreed manner of decision-making. On the count of three everyone displays a fist with a certain number of fingers held up to demonstrate your comfort going forward with any given idea, 5 being you are 100% on board, and 0 being you hate the idea. We’ve utilized this technique several times to make decisions, and when we’ve waffled after a clear result, Jesse encouraged us to remember that if we don’t abide by our own decision-making criteria, we remove all of the power from the technique.

A way to move from many ideas to fewer ideas. Each person ranks a given list of items from most interesting to least interesting to them. You then compare lists with your team members and eliminate items based on your shared rankings.

Another way to narrow down ideas. Each team member is given three dots to place next to whichever items of a list that they choose. All three dots could go to one item, or all three to separate items. At the end the items with the most dots, or votes, are taken forward.

This was a way to visualize a problem area and identify steps in a process that could be investigated further. We utilized this technique to visualize the lifecycle’s of several different products.

After spending weeks narrowing our focus to form a problem statement, we then began the ideation phase, which we had been steadfastly avoiding up to that point. The Mad Libs technique was our first foray into techniques designed to broaden our ideas rather than narrow them. Using this tool, you come up with several variables (such as Who, What, and Why/What for) and then quickly generate lists under each variable. You then choose one item from each variable list and imagine those ideas fitting together. In order to ideate on our problem statement, we made lists of People, Form Factor (What) and Action (Why/What is it helping them to do). This was a really fun way to generate a lot of out-of-the-box ideas quickly.

These are all of the techniques that we have employed so far! I’m sure that we will learn many more as we continue the design process.
