Busy Bee

I have always been terrified of bees. The persistent, evil buzzing that ring down your ear canal. The stark contrast of the bright yellow juxtaposed with deep black, shouting at you “Stay Away! I can hurt you!” Their quick, speed of light darting abilities making them impossible to escape from. Growing up it didn’t matter if you were a wasp, a bee, a yellow jacket, if I saw one I ran.

However, this series of photographs is by far my favorite series I have produced so far.

I love the colors in every part of the photographs. The variety of washed out purple spreading for the vibrant, dark purple veins in each flower. The background greens with hints of yellow from the sun hitting them just right. The dark yellow orange paired with an almost almond brown exterior of the bee.

I love the detail in the flower and the bee. You can see the microscopic trichomes on the flower’s stem, the same size as the little golden hairs on the bee. You can see the structure of the vein like pedals mimicking the structure of the bee’s reinforced scaffold wings.

My flirtation with photography this summer has taught me a variety of lessons. It has taught me to search for multiple points of view of the same idea, everything has a story, and often times you never see the work that went into creating what you see.

All images shot on iPhone X at the UW Arboretum on August 19, in Seattle.
