I Will Never Read All the Books I Want to Read

I’m not great at math but even I can see the problem here

When I was a wee young child, we lived in a one-room cabin and had no money. I owned maybe a dozen books, which I read over and over and over and over again, until they fell apart. The library was my favorite place. I read all their books too.

When I grew up and lived in a house with more than one room, and had a little more money, I was able to buy more books. Sometimes, I’d buy more than one book at a time. I would put the rest in a to-be-read (“TBR”) pile. It sat on the nightstand, like any decent TBR pile. Three, four, maybe even five books sometimes. I would read down the pile, in the order in which they arrived. Very fair, very orderly.

My goodness, a whole shelf!

I continued to read the books in order. Fair was fair, after all. If I was really really excited about reading a new acquisition, well, I just had to get cracking on my shelf, didn’t I?

Then two things happened, and now this system has broken down entirely.

Now…I have a TBR bookcase in my bedroom. Four shelves, packed with books. I do most of my reading in dead-tree format, but I do have an e-reader, for travel and whatnot, and it’s packed with books too.

There are books in that bookcase that have been there since…hmm…since the moment I abandoned the “wait your turn” policy.
