Advice To University Students Trying To Find Their Way In Life

Knowing what you want to do right out of school is wrought with challenges. How are you supposed to know what you want to do if you haven’t already tried it?

Thinking back to my days as a student, I had a sense that I wanted to work in business, however I didn’t really know what that meant.

Find your ikigai. This is a Japanese concept that is often associated with a Venn diagram that has four overlapping qualities: what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for. Being mindful of this concept might help you live a more fulfilling life.

Learn by doing. As a university student, I was a Trainee at PwC, the Licensee of TEDxMacquarieUniversity, Head of Sponsorship at Podio, and a Co-founder of multiple startups. I learned more by doing (and failing) than I did from university lectures.

Discover your stretch zone. We often talk about anxiety as a bad thing but some anxiety in life can be good, as it gives you the spark of energy you need to perform at your best. Find challenges that get you out of your Comfort Zone and into your Stretch Zone.

Seek out communities that inspire you. Attending One Young World (and other leadership conferences) completely changed my trajectory. I encourage you to apply for conferences and join communities that challenge your world view. Find funding to support your attendance.

Live in another country. Seek out a university exchange. I had the privilege of studying at Copenhagen Business School, and this changed the direction of my life for the better. Living abroad unlocks new perspectives and opportunities. You can often find financial support too.

Executing on these tips will have a lasting impact on who you are as a person. I’m excited to hear how you get on!
